He played college football at West Virginia University, where he earned All-American status, was a Heisman Trophy finalist, Big East Rookie of the Year in 2005 and Sugar Bowl MVP in 2006. He also set multiple WVU and Big East conference records.

Steve was selected by the Houston Texans in the third round (89th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. Steve became a starting running back early in his rookie season, and enjoyed a number of 100+ yard games. In Week 14, Steve led the Texans in a 30-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on a Monday Night Football game with 21 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Steve also made two receptions for 52 yards, including a 46-yard screen reception. For his first career Monday Night Football performance with 182 yards of total offense, Steve was honored as AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Steve set the Houston Texans' franchise single-season rushing record as a rookie with 1,282 yards. His 1,282 rushing yards were the most among rookie running backs and sixth in the NFL.

On September 27, 2011, Slaton was waived by the Texans and claimed by the Miami Dolphins the following day.
